Clean-Air-City-Ceramics is a collection of glazed architectural ceramics developed by Studio Christine Jetten, incorporating captured industrial particulate matter into ceramic glazes. The material demonstrates a circular approach by transforming airborne industrial waste into a functional and decorative finish for architectural applications.
The glazes are produced using fine particulate matter captured from industrial air filtration systems. Instead of being disposed of as waste, these particles are incorporated into ceramic glaze formulations, creating distinctive surface finishes while contributing to the reuse of industrial by-products. This approach supports improved resource utilisation and helps divert residual waste from disposal.
The ceramic tiles themselves can contain a high proportion of recycled material, with some examples incorporating up to 60% recycled content. Combined with the waste-based glaze, the result is a circular ceramic product suitable for use in façades, interiors and public spaces.
The collection explores the visual possibilities of ceramic glazes through variations in colour, texture, light reflection and surface depth. Custom glaze formulations enable a wide range of aesthetic expressions, allowing architects and interior designers to develop project-specific finishes that extend beyond standard ceramic products. Due to the nature of the recycled raw materials and glazing process, each surface has its own distinctive appearance.
Designed for architectural and interior applications, Clean-Air-City-Ceramics can be used as wall cladding, façade elements and decorative ceramic surfaces where both material performance and visual identity are important. The collection demonstrates how ceramic materials can contribute to sustainable design while offering extensive creative freedom.
Ceramics can be recycled repeatedly without significant loss of material quality, supporting circular material flows at the end of a product’s service life.
